Often, yes. Many wills solicitors in Ireland now offer a fully remote service — by phone, video call and post. Without a will, the Succession Act 1965 applies. Your surviving spouse inherits two-thirds of your estate; children share the remaining third. Critically, unmarried partners receive nothing under these rules regardless of how long the relationship lasted. Stepchildren, charities and friends also receive nothing unless specifically included in a will.
Probate typically takes 9–18 months, depending on estate complexity. Simple estates may complete in under a year. A probate solicitor handles all Revenue filings, the probate application and the final distribution to beneficiaries.
An Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) lets you appoint a trusted person to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity. Without one, your family may face an expensive and distressing court process. An EPA must be set up while you have full mental capacity. Many people make one alongside their will — ask your matched solicitor about doing both together.
